Question by jason S: Dog demands to much attention?
I have 4 dogs, 3 Dogue De Bordeauxs and a mutt, My boy Bordeaux demands to be loved on about every 30 minutes or so, if you try to rub one of the other dogs he will stick his head in between your hand and the other dog just to push them out the way where he can recieve the given attention if you insist on rubbing the other dog he will eventually rap his jaws around your arms and pull you to him not to hurt you but to keep you away from the other dogs, he is a very jealous dog, I was wondering how I could stop him from acting like this
I have a fenced in yard they stay outside and play hours at a time, so exercise is’nt the problem, good guess though

Is it worth trying to show my dog?

Question by Britomartis: Is it worth trying to show my dog?
I have a 4.5 year old Dogue de Bordeaux intact male. I’ve checked him to the best of my knowledge and he seems to fit the breed standard as far as I can tell, except he’s of a little lighter build than most DDBs I’ve seen. He definitely has the bloodlines and is in great shape, but there’s two things that make me wonder if it’s worth even trying to show him.

1. His age. I wanted to get him into showing before, but I’m kind of in the middle of nowhere as far as dog shows are concerned, and my parents weren’t too hot on driving 3 hours each way for a single show. But soon I’ll be getting my drivers license so I’ll be able to take him myself.

2. He partially tore his CCL. He’s still limping on his right hind leg, but he’s in physical therapy and we’re following his program, so he should be recovered in a month or two. I can’t think why showing would reinjure the leg, but if for some reason his stride isn’t strong that could put him out.

We’d really like to breed him because he’s a wonderful dog, but if he’s not up to breed standard there’s no way we’d consider it, and I think the only way to really tell is if he can compete in the show ring.

Try to find another breeder to evaluate your dog. Send pictures if you have to.

Extreemly small French Mastiff…bad breeding?

Question by skattered0077: Extreemly small French Mastiff…bad breeding?
I was at the park today with my child and spotted a French Mastiff (Dogue de Bordeaux) with a lady and her kids. Being the new owner of an Argentine Mastiff (Argentine Dogo) and just lover of big dogs in general I approached her to ask about her dog which I assumed based on size was 8 to 9 weeks old. When she told me that the pup was 17 weeks I had to ask again cause the dog was tiny.

My Dogo is 10 weeks and about 23lbs now…this dog couldnt have been more than 15lbs. I asked her where she got her from and how much she paid for it. She went on about the fantastic breeder and that she had paid over $ 2000 for it.

I was shocked! I told her to look into why the dog is so small given that my Dogo is much bigger than it at 7 weeks younger and overall are about 20-40lbs lighter once fully grown.

Does anyone know more about French Mastiffs and if they have growth spurts? Also, any experience that you have with French Mastiffs please.

ps…no, my dog was not at the park with me, waiting til she gets all her shots before I do that. though I did feel bad…its a beautiful day here in east Alabama… :)
Ed, thats what I thought! Ive not owned or had much to do with French Mastiffs but have owned a Bull Mastiff in the past and he was huge at 4 months! I kinda thought they shared similar traits. The dog was 17 weeks…I asked her twice cause I was sure that I didnt hear correctly….

Yes that is incredibly small for a Dogue de Bordeaux and in a sense i hope it was 7 as opposed to 17 weeks. My Bullmastiff is 60 pounds and 16 weeks (no fat on him) and dogue de bordeaux share similar traits with dogue de bordeaux. It may be bad genetics or just that that particular dog was the runt of the litter.
