Question by Phoebe: Best family guarding breed?
I’ve grown up with Doberman’s (my father bred them) and although I love the breed I find them to be a bit too mad and energetic for our household.
We want to get a dog with guarding instinct as our family pet (with small children). We both love big dogs and are very competent at training and being able to handle a large breed.
I know all about the Doberman, and have looked at the top ten guarding breeds lists – but I need to hear it from real people who’ve owned these breeds.
Rotties, GSD’s, BullMastiffs, Dogue de Bordeaux, Great Danes…
Are they good with children?
Would they lay down their life for you, the way a Dobie would?
How energetic are they?
Male or female make a difference?
Thank you for your dog experiences – so interesting to read!
And to that one person (there’s always one!) I didn’t mean literally die for me – in the rare instance anything bad were to happen, its just nice to know your dog would rather die than run off and leave you to get savaged. That’s devotion, and I’d do that for anyone in my family, so I expect my dog to be the same

I have a Doberman, and I find it great that you can admit to yourself the breed is too high energy for your household! So I just wanted to commend you on that
From what I hear, GSDs are also high energy, plus you have the shedding from the longer hair they have.
Great Danes are not even close to being a good protection dog! Unless it’s the sheer size that scares someone off.
The rest of them I’m not as familiar with.
